Blog Series “The #1 Reason Why People Fail"

Failure looks different for everyone. For some, it might be falling short of your yearly income goal; for others, it might be missing out on a big promotion. The point is that failure happens in the workplace whether you want it to or not, but failing can also be beneficial - it's all about your mindset.

Having a positive mindset at work affects all aspects of your professional life. From the work you produce to the relationships you create, having a positive attitude will determine how likely you are to succeed in the workplace.

It should come as no surprise that having a negative attitude also happens to be the #1 reason why people fail. Having a negative attitude gives your mind the power to limit how much you can grow and achieve professionally (and personally), ultimately leading to failure. Switching your mindset to a more positive one is possible with a bit of practice and can be the difference-maker in how you grow. Here are three tips to help you achieve a positive attitude.

1. Change your Actions

A positive mindset starts with your everyday actions. Are you doing activities in your personal life that excite you? Do you spend time with your friends and loved ones? Do you take care of your physical health? Many who develop a negative mindset live as bystanders to their own life. Going through the motions day by day rather than actively participating in their life is a fast track towards a negative mindset.

You have control over your actions and what you do, so choose positive actions.

2. Set Goals

Goal setting triggers motivation in people's minds, especially when it is a clear, definitive, and reasonable goal. Having a goal will be the northern star that guides you when life gets confusing and you feel lost. Plus, making progress towards your goals is highly addicting. Once you gain that progress, it builds so much momentum that you won't want to slow down until you have successfully achieved your goals. The closer you get to your goals, the closer you'll be to a positive mindset.

3. Avoid Negative Self-Talk

It is so easy to talk down to yourself. As humans, we are hard-wired to be our own worst critics. "You aren't smart enough," "you will never be as good," "why can't you just get it right?" These thoughts limit your ability to grow because it keeps you in a state of self-deprecation. As mean as that critic in your mind is, you have the power to silence it! Be aware of when your critic is speaking and ask if you would say this to a friend or a child. If the answer is no, why would you say it to yourself?

We must admit that success isn't easy, especially when it begins with changing your mindset from negative to positive. But like anything good in the world, it comes with time, patience, and hard work. It will be 100% worth it because you are no longer saying no to yourself in the workplace. You are not accepting failure as an option; instead, you are looking at the positives, learning from those failures, and aiming for success.
